MLB Futures Odds: MVP And Cy Young Odds

  • Jacob DeGrom is the -125 favorite to win NL MVP and has -1000 odds favorite to win NL Cy Young.
  • Shohei Ohtani has the shortest odds to win AL MVP at -275.
  • Gerrit Cole is the betting favorite at -130 to win the AL Cy Young award.

LAS VEGAS – Now that the MLB All-Star break is in the rearview mirror, it’s time to take a serious look at the odds for MVP and Cy Young winners. Heading into the second half of the season, most award races are seemingly either between two players are near set in stone.

MVP Future Odds: DeGrom and Ohtani Lead The Way

The MVP races in the American League and National League are both listed as two-player races. In the National League, Jacob DeGrom has the shortest odds with Fernando Tatis right on his tail.

Online gambling sites are acknowledging the historic season that DeGrom is having thus far. There are too many records to list in one place, but it seems as if every time he takes the mound he’s accomplishing another historical feat. His 1.08 ERA, 146 strikeouts and 4.8 WAR lead the NL. His fastball has an average velocity of 99.1 mph nearly 2 mph higher than the next qualified starting pitcher.

NL MVP Odds

  • Jacob DeGrom -125
  • Fernando Tatis Jr. +125

Tatis is having a great season in his own right as he has recorded a .286 batting average to go along with his NL-leading 28 home runs. The unfortunate truth for Tatis is that if DeGrom keeps his pace there is little to no chance of him winning the NL MVP.

In the American League, the race is between Shohei Ohtani and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Vlad Jr. is hitting a league-best .332 at the plate, has the most RBI in the AL (73) and is second in home runs (28). Ohtani doesn’t quite stack up at the plate with his .279 average, 33 home runs and 70 RBI, but he has the added advantage of being a pitcher.

AL MVP Odds

  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. +200

This is a tougher line to project as nobody can tell for sure how voters will count Ohtani’s pitching abilities, but also because Guerrero isn’t too far off of potentially winning the Triple Crown. At this point, it’s Ohtani’s award to lose, but a triple crown winner would have to be given the MVP.

Cy Young Award: DeGrom and Cole Favorites

Nobody should be surprised to find DeGrom as the favorite in Cy Young considering he’s also the favorite in NL MVP on sports betting sites.

DeGrom could arguably not pitch another inning and still win the Cy Young due to just how dominant he has been this year. DeGrom’s wFB ranks third-best in the MLB and his wSL ranks as the best in the league, meaning his two primary pitches are among the league’s best.

The American League Cy Young race is much closer as Gerrit Cole, Carolos Rodon and Lance Lynn are the favorites. Currently, Lynn leads the ERA race with a 1.99 compared to Rodon’s 2.31 and Cole’s 2.68. Cole however leads in strikeouts with 147 to Rodon’s 130 and Lynn’s 105. Cole also has the lead in quality starts with 13.

AL Cy Young Odds

  • Gerrit Cole -130
  • Carlos Rodon +250
  • Lance Lynn +400

Whether Lynn can keep up his sub-2.00 ERA is yet to be seen, but given his odds, he seems like the value pick to win Cy Young. Sure, his strikeout numbers are low compared to his competition, but in baseball an out is an out.
