DEL MAR, Calif. - The Breeders’ Cup World Championships are set to kick off on Saturday, which will feature a full day of racing.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic features many of the elite horses that horse racing betting fans have come to recognize, from the scandal-plagued Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit to Knicks Go, who enters the race on a three-race win streak.
Breeders' Cup Classic - Del Mar - Race 12
- 1. Tripoli +2200
- 2. Express Train +4000
- 3. Hot Rod Charlie +450
- 4. Essential Quality +300
- 5. Knicks Go +250
- 6. Art Collector +800
- 7. Stilleto Boy +6600
- 8. Medina Spirit +500
- 9. Max Player +900
However, while many have heard of Knicks Go, Art Collector, Hot Rod Charlie and Medina Spirit, less have heard about the underdogs in this race.
Stilleto Boy, +6600
Stilleto Boy, a three year old gelding trained by Ed Moger Jr., is the largest underdog in the entire race.
He’s coming off of a second-place finish behind Medina Spirit on Oct. 2 at the Awesome Again Stakes.
Stilleto Boy has two first-place finishes this year, although both took place more than three months ago. He’s run two races at Del Mar this year, the La Jolla Handicap and the Shared Belief Stakes, and finished fifth and third in those races respectively.
Express Train, +4000
Express Train has run seven races in 2021, and has won two of them, finishing second in one more, and third in three.
He has only failed to show in one race this year, and indeed, has only failed to show in three races in his whole career.
He has a win at Del Mar under his belt this year, having won the San Diego Handicap in July, although he finished in sixth at the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes.
Tripoli, +2200
The last of the major underdogs, Tripoli has three first-place races out of seven under his belt in 2021, with one-second place and one third-place finish each.
He won the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar earlier this year, although he finished fourth in the Awesome Again Stakes - behind Stilleto Boy and Medina Spirit.
The three major underdogs seem to be tied together by virtue of being the least pedigreed and least well-regarded of the horses in this race.
While horses like Medina Spirit, Hot Rod Charlie and Essential Quality ran in the Kentucky Derby, and Knicks Go enters with a dominant recent record, these three horses look to be journeymen.
A win by any of them would be a major upset, and could generate huge revenue for online gambling fans.
