Sports betting officially became legal for Louisiana residents back in June of 2021 following the signing of HB 697. It wasn’t until October 31 when the first land-based sportsbook finally began taking bets at Harrah’s.
Mobile sports betting was officially approved in November, and roughly three months later Louisiana residents now have full access to mobile sports betting from the comfort of their own homes, officially expanding the possibilities of Louisiana’s online gambling market.
“We’re thrilled that the BetMGM Sportsbook is one of the first mobile sports betting apps to launch in Louisiana, just in time for this weekend’s NFL playoffs. We know that many Louisianians visit our retail sportsbooks in Mississippi, and we’re pleased to provide another betting option that rewards customers with one-of-a-kind experiences not available on any other platform,” said Adam Greenblatt, CEO of BetMGM.
Louisiana’s market allows for up to 41 online sports betting operator licenses, so the six that are currently live are just the beginning of what the market will look like throughout the year.
The state itself is sure to benefit as well, as mobile sportsbooks are taxed at 18%. Pair this with the 10% tax on retail sportsbooks, and the Louisiana state government will gain a new source of income. Allocated 100% to the Bond Security and Redemption Fund and Louisiana Early Childhood Education Fund, the benefits will also subsidize various programs set to help Louisiana residents
