Betting odds for players making their British Open debut are rarely as short as Aberg’s, who stands as the third-most likely winner behind Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. However, the 24-year-old Swede has earned his spot at the top with a solo second finish in his Masters Tournament debut earlier this year.
Aberg also finished second in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am with windy and rainy conditions resembling Scottish links golf. Combine all that with a T-4 finish at the Scottish Open last week and you have the recipe for a win contender at The Open Championship.
Bhatia (+8000), Thompson (+12500) Longshots In Open Debuts
Akshay Bhatia makes his British Open debut after recent finishes of T-2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and a T-5 at the Travelers Championship. He’s more of an online gambling longshot than Aberg, but the 22-year-old ranks top 25 in total driving and strokes gained approach on Tour this season.
Davis Thompson is even more of a longshot at +12500 odds, but he showed he can contend on the major championship stage with a T-9 at the grueling 2024 U.S. Open. Thompson qualified for The Open with his first PGA Tour win at the John Deere Classic, where he shot a record-setting 28-under-par.
