- Underdog Fantasy was forced to withdraw from Michigan due to legislative changes.
- The company hopes to eventually rejoin the state, but the time frame is unknown.
- Michigan is now one of 10 states that Underdog Fantasy does not operate in.
LANSING, Mich. – Underdog Fantasy sports has pulled out of Michigan and stopped allowing participants to play in their contests due to recent legislation that would have made their operating status illegal.
Underdog Fantasy Out Of Michigan
Recent legislation that required all daily fantasy sports (DFS) sites to reapply to the Michigan Gaming Control Board forced Underdog Fantasy out. There is hope from within the company that they will eventually be approved, but the time frame is unclear.
The legislation required that DFS sites that had begun operation within the state within the past four years must reapply to resume operation. That four-year requirement was key as larger daily fantasy providers such as DraftKings and Fanduel were not required to reapply.
Underdog Fantasy was founded in 2020, which would have made it mathematically impossible for them to qualify for the four-year exemption.
Michigan has been known to make operating daily fantasy sports sites to be quite difficult. Their most famous example was SB 0459 that was created back in 2015 as a way to regulate the industry in a separate manner than the rest of the country.
