RICHMOND, Va.- Sports betting in Virginia may become a reality in the coming months as state officials have released a sports betting draft proposal to the public.
The proposal was released by the Virginia Lottery Board who has been granted the responsibility of regulating sports betting in the state.
The deadline for the board to approve the final regulations for sports betting is September 15, with a plan to see the launch of mobile and online betting in Virginia by January 2021.

Legal USA Virginia sports betting seems to be headed in the right direction with the Virginia Lottery Board releasing the current draft to the public.
The entire sports betting draft can be viewed and commented on until September 9, giving residents plenty of time to address any concerns.
If passed, regulated mobile sports betting will be available to all residents and tourists of the Commonwealth, with the ability to sign up from anywhere in the state. The Lottery Board is able to authorize up to 12 internet-only sports betting licenses to operators.
“The Virginia Lottery takes very seriously its role assigned by the General Assembly to appropriately and responsibly regulate sports betting in the Commonwealth,” said Kevin Hall, Virginia Lottery Executive Director. “The regulatory framework we are building now is vital to the process, and we are committed to doing so with transparency to allow stakeholders and the public to weigh-in on these preliminary rules-of-the-road for sports wagering in Virginia.”
Per the sports betting statue, residents and tourists will be allowed to wager on almost every major league and college sporting event. There is a clause, however, that any Virginia college or university is prohibited from being wagered on in the state.
These are standard USA online gambling practices for other legal sports betting markets. If the bill passes the final hurdles, then all residents and tourists alike 21 years old or older will be able to bet on sports from anywhere in Virginia.
